International Remote Work

⚠️ Important Notice on Remote Work Authorization

Remote work from outside the United States is not permitted. Questions regarding remote work should be directed to remotework@utdallas.edu.

Please review the Remote Work Guidelines.

Research Assistants (RAs), Teaching Assistants and Teaching Associates (both TAs) are expected to perform their duties on the UTD campus. Per the Office of Graduate Education, all TAs are prohibited from working remotely. If there is a justifiable reason for an RA to perform their job duties off campus (ex. traveling to another lab to use equipment that UTD does not have), they should first consult with the Office of Graduate Education.

For individuals who are not U.S. citizens (e.g., H-1B, TN, E-3, or O-1 status holders) or permanent residents, any change or addition of an employment location – including working remotely from within or outside the United States for any length of time – may require updating the employee’s immigration record or filing an amendment petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To ensure compliance, foreign nationals on an employer-sponsored visa should refrain from working remotely without prior consultation.

Students on F visas, including those on OPT or STEM OPT, should contact UTD’s ISSO (or the international office of their program sponsor) or visit the ISSO’s site on Travel in F or J Status.

Important Documents for International Travel

Please be sure to carry these required documents during your international travel:

  • Valid passport (valid for at least six (6) months beyond your travel dates)
  • Status approval documents (e.g., most recent UTD I-797 approval notice or current I-94 record showing valid status)
  • Valid U.S. visa stamp in your passport (except for Canadian citizens)
  • Last three (3) paycheck stubs from UTD
  • Employment verification letter obtained electronically through the UT Dallas Work Number

Note: OPT and STEM OPT are not employment-based visas. F-1 visa holders in these categories should consult with the international office of their program sponsor for further travel guidance and to obtain the necessary travel signatures.
